Solar Greenhouse without glass insulation.

Badgersett Solar Greenhouse

Amherst, Minnesota -- 1992

This project was designed by Roald and the client to grow hybrid seedling Hazelnut and Chestnut trees.

It's super-insulated and earth-bermed, has an in-bed thermal air exchange system, and an off-grid power system run on photovoltaic solar power and wind.

In the winter, automatic exterior insulated shutters designed by Roald close at night. In the daytime, these shutters provide additional reflected light to the inside from the bright sunlight reflected off the snow.

It has operated without a furnace or back-up heating since construction.

16' x 108' = 1728 sq. ft.
